Sleepy Girl Mocktail (Tart Cherry, Magnesium, and Sparkling Water Bedtime Drink)

The sleepy girl mocktail is a non-alcoholic bedtime drink built on tart cherry juice, magnesium glycinate powder, and prebiotic soda or sparkling water. The drink went viral on TikTok in January 2023 (originated by Calee Shea, popularized by Gracie Norton when she added magnesium) and became the wellness ritual of millions during Dry January 2024. The science is partial — tart cherry contains natural melatonin, magnesium glycinate calms the nervous system — but the ritual and the consistent bedtime cue work whether or not you believe the chemistry. One serving, ready in 5 minutes, drink it 60 to 90 minutes before bed.

Ingredients

ServingsMetric
  • 120 mltart cherry juice
  • 1 tspmagnesium glycinate powder
  • 60 mlprebiotic soda
  • ½ tsplemon juice
  • 4 pieceice cubes
  • 1 piecefresh thyme sprig for serving
  • 3 piecefrozen tart cherries for serving

Method

  1. Pour the tart cherry juice into a wine glass or rocks glass. Use 100 percent juice — not nectar, not from concentrate with added sugar. Brands to look for: Lakewood, R.W. Knudsen, Cherry Bay Orchards, or any 100 percent tart cherry juice from the chilled juice aisle. Sweet cherry juice does not work the same way — it has roughly one tenth the melatonin content of tart cherry.
  2. Add the magnesium glycinate powder directly to the cherry juice and stir vigorously with a long spoon for 20 to 30 seconds until fully dissolved. Magnesium powder dissolves into juice better than into water because the acidity helps break it down. If you see grainy bits at the bottom, keep stirring; do not add ice yet, as the cold will lock the powder into clumps. The juice will look slightly cloudy when the magnesium is fully integrated — this is normal.
  3. Squeeze in the lemon juice and stir once. The lemon is optional but it brightens the drink and balances the sweetness of the prebiotic soda you will add next. If your tart cherry juice is already very acidic, skip the lemon.
  4. Add the ice cubes — 4 cubes is the right amount for a wine glass, more will dilute the drink too much. Pour the prebiotic soda (Olipop, Poppi, or any sparkling water if you prefer no sweetness) slowly down the side of the glass to preserve the carbonation. The drink will turn from deep ruby to a lighter pink as the soda mixes in.
  5. Garnish with the fresh thyme sprig (lavender or mint also work) and 3 frozen tart cherries pierced on a cocktail pick. The frozen cherries do double duty: they slowly release more cherry flavour and act as edible ice that does not water the drink down.
  6. Serve immediately and sip slowly over 10 to 15 minutes, 60 to 90 minutes before bed. Drinking it right before bed is too late — the magnesium needs time to work, and the bubbles can cause discomfort lying down. Do not drink on an empty stomach if you have acid sensitivity; pair with a small handful of almonds or a few squares of dark chocolate (both also rich in magnesium and calming compounds).

FAQ

For a bedtime drink, choose magnesium glycinate (bisglycinate) or magnesium L-threonate in powder form — both absorb well, do not upset the digestive tract, and do not act as laxatives. Magnesium citrate is a mild laxative, the last thing you want overnight. Magnesium oxide is the cheapest form but only 4 percent absorbs, so it is essentially useless for relaxation and sleep regulation. Look for brands like Thorne (Magnesium Bisglycinate), Moon Juice (Magnesi-Om), Pure Encapsulations, or Doctor's Best — the label must say 'glycinate' or 'bisglycinate'. Standard dose is 200 to 400 mg of elemental magnesium per serving, no more — exceeding it causes diarrhea and nausea. Talk to your doctor before regular use, especially with kidney or heart conditions.
